Casetta Cantarella

View across to the port

deal for a family or a group of friends, Casetta Cantarella is a comfy, air conditioned apartment that is well placed for restaurants and other low-key nightlife as well as for beaches. Located in the picturesque small port town of Porto Ercole in the beautiful Argentario region, there is plenty to explore both on the doorstep and further afield.

The dining corner

Indoors: The centrepiece of the spacious open plan living room is an unusual ceramic stove imported from the Tyrol area of northern Italy. This room has been pleasantly decorated with a good use of colour and interesting features like a brick arched hollow containing shelves of ornaments. There are sloping wooden beamed ceilings, terracotta floors, sofas with blue throws and a diverse collection of paintings. Spot lights and lamps illuminate various parts of the room and plenty of natural light comes through the French doors that open out onto the balcony. There is a dining table in one corner of the room and set back at the edge of the room is the fitted kitchen corner containing a dishwasher, a fridge-freezer and a gas oven and hob.

Open-plan living area

Air conditioned bedroom

The main shower room has a washing machine and there is also a smaller washroom with washbasin and toilet. The air conditioned master bedroom is on the same level as the living room and also has a ceiling fan. The second bedroom, which sleeps 3, is found upstairs and there is a large landing in front of it that overlooks the living room. There are twin beds in this bedroom and one of them has a pullout bed beneath it that can convert the bed into a double.

The modern apartment

Outdoors: The balcony is furnished with a small round table and two chairs and enjoys views over rooftops and palms to the port and to one of Porto Ercole’s old fortresses up on a hilltop. The owners also have a sunlounger and a parasol that you can take to the beach with you.

A smart portside bar

Surrounding Area: Porto Ercole is a chic and lively town that also has a calm feel to it. The port itself is just a short walk away and is lined with restaurants and bars where you can watch the boats bobbing up and down. Other restaurants and several shops are within easy walking distance from Casetta Cantarella, as is a gelateria, whose excellent ice-cream we can certainly vouch for. A small supermarket is also nearby so you can stock up the kitchen. The smart marina of Cala Galera is just a short drive away where you can sit in a café or cocktail bar and admire the luxury boats.

La Feniglia beach

The very long sandy Feniglia beach is only a short car journey away and there is parking at the entrance. This is also a great area to go for walks or bike rides as cars are not allowed on the road behind the beach and it leads into a nature reserve at the other end. There are bars and cafés at the start of the beach and you can hire sun-beds and parasols but the rest of the sand is all free. Maritime pines run along the border and provide a shady option for picnic lunches. For days when you don’t fancy the short drive to La Feniglia you can walk in about fifteen minutes to a series of little sandy and rocky coves just past the Hotel Don Pedro. The Argentario also has several other beautiful beaches of varying types to be discovered.

The old Fortezza Stella

The main town of Porto Santo Stefano can be reached in about ten-fifteen minutes drive and you can get ferries from here to the enchanting island of Giglio and the smaller isle of Giannutri. Otherwise you are very well-placed for exploring Tuscany and for day trips to Rome.

Sightseeing: Porto Santo Stefano, Orbetello, La Feniglia, Giglio, Giannutri, Rome, Tuscany.

Views of Porto Ercole

Italian Islands Insight: Casetta Cantarella’s central location does make it an ideal choice for those who love eating out and having a couple of drinks without having to get in a car and drive afterwards. You could perhaps manage without a hire car altogether since plenty of shops and restaurants are round the corner and you can also walk to a small beach. On the other hand we do recommend hiring a car as there is so much to do in the surrounding area and it does make life easier. Hiring bikes could be a good option for spring or autumn though and you can certainly hire a boat for a day excursion or two.

The unique stove centrepiece

This would not be a suitable choice for anyone with mobility difficulties as it is on the second (top) floor of the building and there isn’t a lift. In our opinion this comfortable apartment is a good option for a family holiday, but parents of babies and toddlers should be aware that the internal staircase has open-tread stairs and there are gaps between the rails. If there were three of you staying in the second bedroom upstairs then for greater privacy we can arrange on request for either the double or the single bed to be put on the landing outside as this is almost large enough to be considered a room in itself.

Guests are sure to enjoy this pretty seaside town and its lively promenade and hillside fortresses, and Casetta Cantarella provides the perfect place to experience it whilst in the comfort of a spacious and nicely furnished apartment with all the mod cons.
