Outdoors: Casa Fonte is a two-bedroom first-floor apartment set in an attractive sky-blue pastel-washed villa. Stairs lead up to the good size terrace which has a mosaic pattern in the centre and contains chairs arranged around a hand-painted table. Most of the terrace is covered by a bamboo roof although there is also space to sunbathe and a few steps lead up to a small sloping garden area.

Indoors: Casa Fonte has blue and white interiors, decorated with good Italian taste and featuring smartly tiled floors throughout. The terrace leads into the living room which has a table seating four, Satellite TV and a double sofa bed. A fitted kitchen corner with attractive tiles and a new oven is set back in an alcove off the living room. A hall leads off the main room to the double bedroom, the twin bedroom and the shower room.

Surrounding area: Located in the Le Forna area of Ponza, you can walk from Casa Fonte to several amenities such as mini markets and a bus stop as well as to five nearby restaurants. 150 metres away is the picturesque little bay of Cala Fonte and a longer walk away is the pretty bay of Cala Feola with a good restaurant and near to the natural pools of the Piscine Naturali. You can also get a boat to beaches like Lucia Rosa and the Spiaggia Frontone, which has a bar and restaurant. If you love the sea you will not be able to get enough of Ponza’s azure waters and its marvellous coastline of sheer cliffs, grottoes and craggy nooks. An excellent place to go swimming or snorkelling through underwater tunnels is off the coast of the nearby island of Palmarola, where tuna and dolphins may be spotted. For a longer day trip you can catch a boat to the island of Ventotene. A great way to explore the island by land is by hiring scooters, and the island’s bus service is excellent - you can get on and off wherever you want, but if you prefer you could also hire a car since there is parking.

Although there are lots of daytime activities and lots of good places to eat out in the evening there is little nightlife. Indeed the island has a timeless appeal – you get the impression that nothing has really changed in the last thirty years and as a result it has remained calm and low-key. For a more lively night out it is best to head to Ponza town and the smart bars and restaurants above the port.

Italian Islands Insight: Below on the ground floor are two one-bedroom apartments but Casa Fonte retains a great deal of privacy with its own entrance and terrace up a few stairs to the side of the property. The only thing they have in common is the main gate into the grounds of the property and arriving here is the only time you are likely to notice them. The owners also have a boat and arrange mini-cruises with lunch on board so that you can see the surrounding area. It is certainly the best ways to discover the coast of Ponza and the nearby islands of Gavi, Palmarola and Zannone. For a fee you can also hire the boat with the skipper on board and decide exactly where you want to go or you can pay a cost per person to go as part of an organised tour.

All in all Casa Fonte provides comfy and modern accommodation in a handy location within walking distance of a range of useful amenities. It is best suited to a family or to couples who enjoy sea-based activities and walking, in an island of great natural beauty.
