Italian Islands
Casetta Lilliput

maginatively restored whilst retaining all its original characteristics, Casetta Lilliput is a delightful ground floor mini-apartment located right in the heart of the medieval hilltop village of Giglio Castello. The village is situated 500 metres above sea-level and encircled by old fortified walls. The village offers incredible views across the Mediterranean to the Italian mainland on one side and on the other side to the islands of Elba and Montecristo with Corsica in the distance.

Indoors: Typical of the medieval buildings of the Castello, Casetta Lilliput has wooden beams and rafters and shutters and tile flooring. The self-contained little house comprises a small double bedroom, a shower room and a living area with a sofa, a dining area, a fireplace and a TV. A separate archway contains a quality fitted kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, freezer, hob and oven.

Surrounding Area: Life in the medieval village is one of bustling, typical Italian colour. The local people are known for their genuine warmth. In August you can encounter live jazz music in the various winding streets of Castello or impromptu street parties in the cool evening air.

The beautiful bay of Campese

Giglio has four good sandy beaches to enjoy, where sunloungers, parasols, pedalos, canoes, windsurfs and motor boats may be hired. Scuba diving is also well catered for. Restaurants are plentiful: you can eat inside or outside in the winding streets of Castello or on the waterfront of the picturesque port, Giglio Porto, or in the piano restaurant on the secluded beach of Le Cannelle. Or if you prefer, you can take advantage of the fresh fruit and vegetables, mozzarella, home made ice cream and good wines available locally, to prepare your own Italian meals in the comfort of the small house.

Springtime flowers

There are wonderful walks to be taken in the cool of the evening through the pinewoods or into the countryside where you can feast your eyes on the incredible panorama. Springtime is a riot of fragrant colourful wild flowers with the constant blues of the sky and sea as a backdrop.

Being just under an hour by ferry from the Argentario which is attached by road to the mainland, you can take a day or two out by car to visit Rome's historical monuments (approx. 1 ½ hours drive) the Art and fashion of Florence (approx. 2 ½ hours,) the Tower of Pisa (approx. 2 ½ hours,) Siena's Piazza del Campo (1 ½ hours,) or the famous natural sulphur pools at the Saturnia (1 ¼ hours) Health Spa Complex deep in the Tuscan countryside.

Italian Islands Insight: This is an ideal year-round destination, perfect for a couple, although a pull-out bed or a cot can be provided for a third person if necessary. There is heating for the low season and Christmas and an emergency water supply. Another advantage of the property is its helpful English-speaking owner who spends the summers on Giglio Island herself so can be on hand if needed. Casetta Lilliput offers the rare and unique opportunity to live within the walls of an old Tuscan hilltop town on a marvellous island and in a house with bags of character yet not lacking in modern comforts.
