Casetta Il Pozzo
One of Scopello's beaches
Outdoors: From the gated-entrance and car park area, you ascend by a series of steps passing plants and olive trees to reach the casetta’s prominent paved terrace with its feature of a square brick well, and thence to the property’s front-facing entrance. On the terrace you can sup or sip at the table, or just relax on the loungers, and enjoy a fuller than 180º sweep of the Tyrrhenian Sea, sculpted mountains and farming landscape. Additionally, attended by olive trees, there is a dedicated barbecue, sink and shower area as well as a hammock nearby. Named after the stone well

Indoors: On entry to the property you are in the front-facing living/dining room which also houses a corner kitchen, and you immediately appreciate that it is positioned so that seated at the dining table you still maintain contact with some of the amazing scenery outside. Off the living area are the shower room and double bedroom with storage facilities. The sofa in the living room serves as a bed for up to two children. Opens out onto the terrace

Surrounding area: Casetta Il Pozzo is situated about 4km (2.5 miles) from the picture-postcard village of Scopello, which everyone immediately falls in love with. The village centrepiece is Scopello’s historical ‘baglio’ (an old fortified group of buildings) entered through an archway from the main cobbled square, which has bars, restaurants, a pharmacy, and post office. In the courtyard through the archway there is a bank and several restaurants, one of which is a pizzeria. Years ago, the abundance of tuna brought industry and enlarged Scopello, but the only reminder of this era is the old tonnara, no longer working, in a nearby cove. The whole area is blessed with bathing beaches, coves and crystal clear water, ideal for swimming or snorkelling, especially in the Zingaro Nature Reserve, which stretches 7km northwards from Scopello along the rugged coast shaped by mountains that dip into the Mediterranean. The reserve is also a must for ramblers and nature lovers. South, towards Castellammare, is the Guidaloca beach resort with sporting activities and restaurants. The large port and resort town of Castellammare del Golfo, 9km from Scopello, offers every sort of amenity, leisure and cultural opportunity. Courtyard restaurant in Scopello
The Zingaro Nature Reserve
The lovely island of Sicily, ideal for leisure and sports, also offers millennia of recorded memories of Mediterranean culture and history, the legacy of occupying conquerors; perhaps most notably the impressive temple, hill-top theatre and urban ruins at Segesta, and Selinunte, the largest ancient Greek archaeological site in Europe, with its acropolis, city walls, and temple remains. Likewise, an hour’s drive, or in some cases less, can take you to Erice, the mountain top town often in the clouds, Trapani, for ferries to explore the Egadi islands, and the beach resort on the most north-western tip, San Vito Lo Capo. Sightseeing: Zingaro; Castellammare; San Vito Lo Capo; Erice; Trapani; Egadi Islands; Segesta; Marsala; Marinella di Selinunte; Palermo; Mondello. The double bedroom
Italian Islands Insight: Casetta Il Pozzo is a compelling choice for a holiday. It is set in tranquil, natural scenic surroundings with panoramic views, is not far from beautiful beaches, restaurants offering Sicilian specialities or the amenities of the picturesque medieval village of Scopello. The property also has the advantage of being close to the port town of Castellammare, and connecting routes to further horizons. A hire car is essential. It’s only about an hour’s drive both from Palermo airport and to the many places of interest, not to be missed, in this western region of Sicily. Sea & country views
The charming and friendly owners live nearby. You can buy their freshly bottled olives and you may be lucky enough to be invited to a typical Sicilian meal at their lovely home, for which there is usually a small charge. Casetta Il Pozzo is ideal for two adults, or a family with one or two children. However, a group of four adults and two children (i.e., two extra adults) could also book the adjoining slightly smaller Casetta L’Olivo. |
