Italian Islands

The captivating volcanic islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro, as yet unknown by mainstream tourism, lie at the south-western tip of Sardinia. Both islands have beautiful beaches and diverse landscapes covered in Mediterranean macchia with its unmistakable fragrance of myrtle and pine, as well as expanses of

cultivated land and small wooded areas. They have a long history dating back to the time of the Phoenicians and there are some interesting archaeological sites. Among the things the Phoenicians brought with them when they settled here was the ‘Carignano’ vine and today you can try the excellent Carignano del Sulcis wine that has been aged for five years before bottling. Both the red and white version go well with meat and cheese.

The Sulcis archipelago also contains the smaller islet of Isola Piana which used to have a tuna processing plant (tonnara) and which is flanked by the Isolotto dei Topi (islet of mice) and the Catena rocks, all off the north-eastern point of San Pietro island.
