Casetta Tilde

nspiring views make Casetta Tilde’s balcony the ideal spot to relax with a glass of wine or two. To the front you can see across the countryside to the bay of Campese, with the islands of Monte Cristo and Corsica in the background, and off to one side you can enjoy the magnificent sight of the old hilltop village of Giglio Castello surrounded by fortified walls. Picturesque Giglio Castello

Surrounding Area: Located a couple of minutes walk from the hilltop medieval village of Giglio Castello in a newer development, Casetta Tilde is within easy walking distance of pizzerias, bars and restaurants both within and outside of the old walls. It is also just a short walk to the bus stop where you can catch a bus for the beach resort of Campese or the port village of Giglio Porto – each a 15- minute drive in different directions.

Boats in Giglio Porto

Giglio is part of a National Park and its medieval village, located a cool 500 metres above sea level is also a national monument. There are four good sandy beaches with plenty of facilities and scuba diving is well-catered for. Among other things the island is excellent for swimming, diving, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, mountain biking, mountaineering, tennis, and walking - not to mention sunbathing! Food and wine enthusiasts will love to dine Italian-style in the many pavement restaurants of Castello’s winding streets, or along the romantic waterfront trattorias of Giglio Porto. In the summer evenings Jazz musicians are often to be found spontaneously playing in the streets of the medieval Castello as well as small street parties eating out in the cool evening air. The island is well known for its terraces of vineyards that produce Ansonica wine, a golden grape that gives a good strong flavour. The island is naturally beautiful and great for walks, especially in the springtime when there are wild flowers everywhere. Herbs like rosemary, sage and laurel grow wild in the hedgerows, lending their fragrance to the air along with the scent of pines.

View of the old hilltop village

Giglio Porto is a charming port village with plenty of speciality fish restaurants, pizzerias, open air cafés, ceramic shops and gelaterias offering delicious ice-cream of all different flavours. It is just under an hour’s ferry ride to Porto Santo Stefano in Monte Argentario which is connected to the Italian mainland. The Argentario is a beautiful area to explore and there are many other places of historic and artistic interest to visit in the beautiful region of Tuscany. Rome is only 1 ˝ hours drive and Pisa is around 2 hours drive. You can also get trains from Orbetello Scalo, a short bus ride from Porto Santo Stefano, if you choose not to bring a hire-car.

Italian Islands Insight: We do recommend car hire to get the most out of the location and the wider Tuscan area but you could easily manage without one as the island has a good bus service and several taxis and you can walk to several places to eat out in the evening.
